The Altar in the Oratory of St John Henry Newman came from Father Stanley Bennie's Oratory in Stornoway. The crucifix is late 18th century from Portugal, and belonged to the Rev Lord Victor Seymour, the builder and first Vicar of the great Anglo-Catholic shrine church of St Stephen’s, Gloucester Road in London.

After his death the crucifix was given to Canon Donald Nicholson, who was a curate at the church during the time when T S Eliot was churchwarden to the well know Fr Eric Cheetham.
