The Ordinariate in Birnie Kirk, near Elgin

Evening Prayer is said every Wednesday at 7pm in
Birnie Kirk, IV30 8SU
, three miles south of Elgin,
from Divine Worship according to the Rites of the
Personal Ordinariate Mass of Our Lady of Walsingham.

Birnie Kirk, once the Cathedral of Moray, is older than the great Abbeys and Cathedrals in Scotland, most of which are now in ruins. This Norman building built no later than 1140 has witnessed to almost 900 years of uninterrupted Christian worship.

Closed by the Church of Scotland in November 2023, who were 'making the best use of resources' in 'increasingly challenging times', with the agreement of the new Elgin Kirk Session, Christian worship continues thanks to the Ordinariate who
were invited to find a way of keeping Christian worship alive.

Birnie Kirk was founded by St Brendan the Navigator in
the 6th century, a stone plaque depicting the Saint, carved
from local stone by Philip Chatfield (click here) was carried
from the hall up to Birnie Kirk in procession in August 2024
(short video: click here) led by the Monks of Pluscarden Abbey
and now hangs on the south wall inside the church.
